CCRC Scientist Wins Gold Medal for Cancer Talk

The UCC College of Medicine and Health held a very successful one-day Translational Health Research Conference, in association with Pfizer and Cork Cancer Research Centre, in the Brookfield Health & Sciences Complex on 24th June 2009. The conference had over 180 registrants and up to 90 posters.

Opening remarks by Prof Michael Berndt, head of the College of Medicine and Health, started off the day's events which included presentations by keynote speakers on Neuroscience, Public Health/Health Services and Cancer.

Gold medal winners, sponsored by Pfizer, were also chosen from three selected speakers in each of the subject areas. The gold medal for cancer was awarded to Tracey O’Donovan from Cork Cancer Research Centre for her talk titled: 'Autophagy in oesophageal cancer: A mechanism of resistance to cytoxic chemotherapy'.
